Vice-president Yemi osinbajo while speaking at a conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said fake news are capable of resulting in great adverse effects.
He said - I have been one of the victims of fake news. It can cause marriage crisis. My wife called me about 3 or 4 weeks ago saying - Yemi what are you doing with strippers? I replied - how do you mean?
I later read a post from a famous blog that states 'Osinbajo caught with strippers'.
There was actually a picture where I was sitting between two clothed women but beneath the picture, the same women were not wearing much.
I observed that the picture was taken in an entertainment event where these women were wearing perfect clothes, but it was as if the picture was taken when they dressed like strippers on the blog.
The vice-president further rejected legislation that would limit press freedom, claiming it involved the right to post on social media and creation of blogs.
He made it known that regulating social media would result to lack of freedom of speech. The control could never be left for legislature and government without some form of domineering activities.
Publicity and Voter Education committee of the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), however, is set to establish weekly press briefings in expectation of election purposely because of fake news.
The chairman of the Committee, Festus Okoye who was also at the conference said that the main mark of fake news are the youths of the country.
The question is - what is the need for passing fake information to the society?
